Before You Start with Home improvments
Should you consider DIY?
When it comes to home improvement projects, most of us start with our dream and scale back as and when we get all the different quotes from the painting and decorating, plumbing and other contractors. Not content with second best, however, we try to get the highest value we possibly can from our money. The easiest and most obvious way to do this is to cut the cost of labour and do all those little and not very difficult (or at least in our opinion) jobs ourselves.
But is this working in our favour? The answer to this question unfortunately depends on a number of factors including time available, skills, tools as well as the degree of motivation to do the work up to our usually very high standards on our own. Beware though: whereas it is relatively easy to pick up the brush, start paining and do a generally good job, unless you are highly skilled and experienced you are strongly advised not to deal with projects that include:
- Electrical work
- Extensive plumbing work, especially when it involves gas
- Difficult work at heights, such as roofing
So that the number of mistakes are minimised, there are the number of issues that need to be considered before any home improvement work is undertaken.
Time is money! With this respect, when deciding on whether to tackle a home improvement job yourself or pay for a professional to do it, you should bear in mind that although usually professionals would finish it quicker, they could also take up to a week or even more to start: a time which may be more than enough for you to complete the job or the project!
Furthermore, home improvement job may look easy initially, however, it always pays to be realistic about your skills. It would not be doing yourself a favour if you embark on a particular job and don't finish it or finish it to a standard that would require for the professionals to be called in!
You should also always keep in mind that some jobs may require special tools. Although many of these could be rented from companies, such as HSS, it needs to be remembered that to complete a job up to an acceptable standard texperience in using these tools is also of an essence. Therefore, you should always think twice before spending any money on tool rentals.
If after careful consideration you decide that hiring a professional would be the best way forward, take care in selecting the ones you hire. Usually the best way to find good people is through personal recommendations for example from friends, family members and colleagues who have had similar work done and were happy with the results and the service. You can also find details of companies working in your area if you use one of the search engines on the Internet. Yellow Pages is another source of names if you are dealing with a home-repair emergency.
For problems with products or some materials such as appliances, flooring, or carpeting, always check the conditions of your warranty before hiring a repairperson or doing the work yourself. By using factory-authorised service agents, you may not have to pay for the repair if the product or appliance is under warranty. And if you do not use authorised service agents, not only will you have to pay and you may void your warranty!!!
